So you may have noticed that this post came very quickly after the design post. Well, we started the blog a little after we started the project. As a result, we have some catching up to do. At any rate, we completed the base about a week ago and took a few shots.
The stand is constructed of the following:
- Birch Plywood, 3/4″, 2 Sheets
- Pine Sub-floor, 1 1/8″, 2 Sheets
- MDF, 3/4″, 2 Sheets
- Pine 2×10 (this is to level the load on the casters)
- 3″ Screws
- 2″ Screws
- 1/4″ x 2″ Lags (to attach the casters)
- 1/4″ Lock washers
- Woodcraft Casters, 300lb per caster (Check them out here)
We used a variety of tools:
- Table Saw
- Miter Saw
- Drill
- Counter-sink bit
- A variety of clamps
- Kreg Pocket Hole Kit
If you would like more detailed plans or the sketch-up file, just ask and I will send it your way. Now check out the finished product:
The Custom Stand

As we began building the base for the mill, we came to the conclusion that we just did not like the stand that would support it all. While the uni-strut stand that the plans call for will support the unit just fine, we felt that there would be a great deal of wasted space and were not totally convinced at how easily it would roll around on caster. As a result we went looking around the forums and happened across a great design for a custom stand that allowed for that space to be better used.
We made a few changes and came up with our very own design that you see below. This stand will allow for around 20 cubic feet of storage including 8 drawers and a large long section in the middle to store other odds and ends. Take a gander:
